Norwegian Wood
Haruki Murakami’s Norwegian Wood is going to be made into a movie soon and to be released in 2010. This novel was published in 1987 and one of the best-selling books, you know. Now it is translated into 36 foreign languages. I am very happy to know Tonomine Kogen and some other places in Hyogo Prefecture are chosen for location. Mr. Muraki ,who graduated from Kobe High School, has connection with Kobe. Tonomine Kogen is famous for its beautiful scenery of Japanese pampas grass in autumn. The best season is coming soon. I read this novel last summer and I’d like to read it again.

2008 Iwate-Miyagi Inland Earthquake
A magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit Iwate, Miyagi and other areas in northern Japan yesterday morning. At least six people died and 79 were injured so far. Further aftershocks are warned.
I experienced the Big Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. Fortunately, there was not so much heavy damage in my area, however, lifelines like water, electricity and gas inevitably stopped. Imagine that you can’t access all of them all of a sudden. The electricity was restored at first and next was the gas. Water was the last. I couldn’t wash my hands, cook and gradually faced a shortage of drinking water. The biggest problem was the toilets. When a water supply truck came to my area in about three days, I was really relieved.
I have been storing emergency foods and bottled water in my closet near my door. Small vinyl bags and cooking scissors are very convenient for emergencies. You can cook foods without knives and cooking boards, and then mix some foods in a vinyl bag. Portable gas stoves are needed.
Plus, it would be better for you to remember the names of medicines which you regularly take. Many hospitals and clinics were destroyed and medical prescriptions for patients were not found soon at that time,

A NHK program featured “Spiritual Boom” last night. This stressful society tends to make people nervous and unstable about their future. Companies can’t help competing with each other keenly to make a profit. Many workers are stressed out. So, they go to a fortune-teller to seek some advices. Some people were healed only by telling their troubles, but some were demanded unfair money.

A new laundry service business is gradually becoming popular. The company comes to homes to collect clothes. They wash, dry, fold them neatly and return them to the customers.
Two bag sizes are available. The bigger bag can hold 60~80 T-shirts in it and it costs 3,000 yen.
Senior citizens, single persons and stores like beauty-treatment clinics are the target customers to use this service. Each bag is washed separately, so we don’t have to worry about our clothes being washed with other people’s.
I want to use this service when I am sick or get older. This service is very helpful to elderly people who have no family.

There are Internet Café, Book Café, English Café and Dog Café around Japan. I knew Cat Café for the first time from a newspaper. “Cat Café Nyanny” has been open in Kobe since last December. It is said that there are about twenty Cat Cafes in our country, chiefly in Tokyo and Osaka.
In the Cat Café in Kobe, there are nine lovely cat staffs. Women, couples and even a single man, about 80 people at most per day, visit the café. People who can’t have cats at home due to house situation want to be healed by cat staffs in there. They look at cats and play with them, giving snacks or using Nekojarashi. They can have tea and even drink beer or whisky.
However, the café owner says, “I don’t want a customer to hold and hug cats by force despite cats are denying to be done so. That’s because cats are capricious and it is one of cats’ charms that we can’t do as we want.
In my childhood, I had a cat at my house. I wanted to play with it more, but it often refused to play with me and left me alone.
The fee is 1,000 yen per hour, excluding the fee of tea or drinks. Do you want to go there? As for me, “No”
